Trek Itinerary:

Arrival Day: Pick up at Senggigi, Teluk Kodek, Bangsal, Airport and or Kuta then transfer to Sembalun and check in at your hotel. After dinner you will get briefing from your guide explains the route details, local tradition and what you might see, waste management, safety procedures. If you reach Sembalun at 14.00 or 15.00 pm then you will have time to walk around the village with your guide to see to see life-style of the community and farming system. You also will plant avocado seeds in the community’s garden with the hope they will get benefit from avocado tree in the future by selling avocados.

Day 1: Register at the National Park Office in Sembalun (1,156m), meet your guide and arrange National Park entry tickets. The trek starts from Sembalun with a gentle ascent walking through open grassland used as cattle grazing by local people. Resting at Pos 1 Pemantauan (1,300m), after about three hours walk from Sembalun we reach Pos 2 Tengengean (1,500m) enjoy the beautiful views of Mt. Rinjani’s summit (3,726m). After another hours ascent to Pos 3 Pada Balong (1,800m), we start the steep 3.5 hour climb amidst the pine-like Casuarina species locally known as Cemara, perhaps seeing evidence of wild pigs and the long-tailed grey macaque monkeys to the camp site at Plawangan 2 Sembalun crater rim (2,639m).

Day 2: A 3 am start is necessary for the hard three-hour climb to the summit (3,726m) on volcanic screen. Once there, enjoy proud feelings of satisfaction and the amazing sunrise views across the Wallace Line to Bali, Mt. Agung and Sumbawa, and down to the lake Segara Anak (2,000m) within the Rinjani crater. As the glows on the sea turned to the first rays of ruddy gold, shutters clicked and digital cameras pinged. For a moment it was possible to forget frozen fingers and noses as we all relished the thrill of witnessing sunrise from 3,726m up on the top of Rinjani. As the sun climbed higher we could make out neighboring volcanoes – first Tambora on Sumbawa to the east, second then later, Mt. Agung on Bali to the west. As the sunlight strengthened another dark triangle took shape beside Agung-the shadow of Rinjani itself, reaching across the Lombok Strait. Mt. Baru (2,351m) is an island in the lake and an active volcano, last erupting dramatically in 1994. Return down the ridge passing numerous edelweiss plants bunga abadi to the crater rim camp for a well-deserved breakfast.

The descent from the Sembalun crater rim is amidst the pine-like Casuarina species locally known as Cemara, and perhaps seeing evidence of wild pigs. After you walk about 3.5 hours and reach Pada Balong (1,800m) through grassland used as cattle grazing by local people. Mt Rinjani summit (3,726m) towers above us, Indonesia’s second highest volcanic peak. From here is a beautiful view of Sembalun and Sembalun Bumbung villages, known for coffee production until the crop was changed to garlic to take the advantage of the garlic boom in early 1990s.  The road head is reached after another four hours gentle descent through open country, and the trek ends in Rinjani Information Centre, in Sembalun.
