RinjaniJourney is based in Mataram, Lombok – West Nusa Tenggara Province and we have also an office on the ground in the village of Sajang, Sembalun sub-district, East Lombok. It replaces the previous website of Lombok Hijau Tours. It was established in 2014with the purpose to continue what the GunungRinjani National Park: Rinjani Trek Ecotourism Program achieved during the program phase.
We are very confident that developing responsible tourism by encouraging ecotourism is the best way to maintain natural conservation; encourage visitors to minimize the negative impact and encourage the local people to manage their natural resources in sustainable manner. By involving the community, the local government, tourism industry, other institutions that concern on environment, then natural conservation can effectively function and of course is able to improve the welfare of the local community. All of our guides and porters are member of Conservation Group.
I was involved from the beginning of the GunungRinjani National Park: Rinjani Trek Ecotourism Program, was to use “bottom-up” processes to evolve a locally relevant rational for bringing the three circles.The implementation activities were focused in three sectors, reflecting three distinct stakeholder groups: park management, tourism, and community development.I was as Community Development Officer for four years then as Rinjani Trek Manager till the end of project funded by NZAID.
This idea came to be known as the “three circles” approach. The term “ecotourism” and an idea about the three sectors working collaboratively to achieve jointly agreed outcomes were introduced gradually as confidence and a sense of common purpose evolved.
A working committee as formed and after substantial assistance from local authorities, the Rinjani Trek Center (RTC) was created in Senaru. Later, with Park helped the Rinjani Information Center (RIC) was created in Sembalun. The RTC and RIC became focal point of the program’s aim to “bring the circles together”. The Rinjani Trek Management Board (RTMB) was created to continue what the program achieved. The RTMB was conceived as an overseeing body to take responsibility for what was then being extensively promoted as the “Rinjani Trek”.And I was as Rinjani Trek Manager till 2014.
The “three circles” approach became acknowledged within Indonesia as a model for ecotourism development, winning support from the Ministry of Forestry and from the Ministry of Tourism in Jakarta.
We would like to return it to refresh and update the system and collaborate with the local agents in Senaru and Sembalun and also with the local government in the village of Senaru. Update the regulation of the tourism organization in Senaru with strong support from local government to regulate by their authority. We will also collaborate with the GunungRinjani National Park to include in their regulation to “reduce the use of plastic”. The visitors must bring a refillable water bottle. We implement five basic principles in our product:
1. Economic value: provide benefit to local people and minimize the negative impacts.
2. Conservation: responsible, commit to contribute to nature conserve and cultural preservation.
3. Community involvement: community participation is key of succeed as they involve from product development process, story-telling and receive benefits.
4. Education: increase the awareness, learning and appreciation of nature value, provide knowledge to the visitors, communities and other stakeholders through the interpretation.
5. Trip principle: create a sense of secure, ensure satisfaction and a valuable experience for visitors.
